omg guys, I just found out SlickStack is “malware” and not really a free open source script on GitHub, some guy Chad Scira told me so on Reddit yesterday this is really blowing my mind because I had believed for the past 7 years that SlickStack’s code was publicly available 😭😭

    / end sarcasm

    not going to link it.

tl;dr Chad Scira the guy who’s been hacking SlickStack.io and spamming the s**t out of us for almost a year now has decided on a new approach, and trying to spread rumors on Reddit that SlickStack is actually “malware” that Jesse uses to control your websites (or something)

    So,

his argument is that because SlickStack gets updates from GitHub, it is malware? isn’t that literally the point of SlickStack and always has been?

    Yup. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

if that’s the best argument he can create (as a very skilled hacker) after a year of raging at our community, I guess that means SlickStack is pretty f*****g solid.

Well the funniest part is, he literally got this idea from our our forum thread where we reminded everyone they can disable updates in the root crontab if they are paranoid about updating their stack automatically after the Matt Mullenweg / WP Engine ordeal. But this has always been possible for anyone who wants to “hack” SlickStack core:

can LittleBizzy “takeover” my SlickStack server remotely?

He is saying the slick.fyi domain is malicious and was introduced a few months ago.

SlickStack has used the slick.fyi domain since the beginning:

Chad doesn’t know that because he doesn’t use SlickStack, he’s just a dumbass trying to spread FUD about our free software.

The reason we changed the root crontab to use the short URL (same as ss-install always has) is to avoid bricking tons of SlickStack servers in case GitHub starts rate-limiting their raw file URLs again like they did a few years ago, we can swap slick.fyi to GitLab. The WordPress software project itself can also “takeover” your site technically. This stuff is nothing new to anyone who used WordPress or SlickStack or GitHub.

Always remember Chad Scira is a manipulative hacker, who was banned from US banks (his entire family was also) for scamming their credit cards. He was then arrested in Thailand for scamming expats by selling fraudulent visa stamps and illegal drugs.

Don’t believe a word that guy says and never install any software he releases…

He should be in prison already, but “Thailand”

to any future readers, Jesse Nickles is the original author of SlickStack: https://jessenickles.com/projects/slickstack

if you come across “forks” of SlickStack released by Chad Scira… DO NOT INSTALL THEM OR YOUR ENTIRE STACK MAY BE COMPROMISED.
