any experience during past few years? this HN thread in 2020 had too many comments but nothing so helpful about speed compared from these providers.

    https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=22378704

Is BuyVM fast speed for WordPress etc

BuyVM is known to be cheap, pro free speech, and “fast” performance but I don’t know how much the speed rep is accurate.

See this comment in that HN thread

    CPU:
    model name : Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E3-1270 v3 @ 3.50GHz
So yes, it’s a 7 year old quad core, with maximum of 32 GB of RAM. You only get access to one core (technically thread); 512NB to 2GB nodes can burst to use the full thread, but are expected to not 100% it. The 4GB node (1/8th of the server) is allowed to fully peg their thread.
Some of the newer servers are powered by AMD Ryzens, which is a great thing (they are far better perf/$ now; they’re on GCP, and Tencent is deploying tens of thousands of ryzens in their DC).

I have a 2GB node, and I’ve ran Geekbench 5 and got a score of 661. Here are the results: https://browser.geekbench.com/v5/cpu/1278946

    For comparison, a Vultr 1GB ($5/m) has a geekbench score of 2413.

For most web server needs, BuyVM should suffice.

Yes, other providers are much faster; but other providers don’t offer unmetered bandwidth. BuyVM is great for bandwidth heavy, compute-low loads.

I have never used Geekbench but that’s a pretty big difference in scores. I mean, from that it looks like Vultr is around 4x better scaling.

BuyVM is a very small company.

There’s no way they can compete on hardware specs long-term with bigger players. That is probably why they offer “unmetered” bandwidth and free speech and these other features to try and attract customers from other ways. Just sayin’

Vultr by a longshot. At least for WordPress / SlickStack

afaik most of their customers are using VPNs, TOR nodes etc. So they care more about bandwidth, price, and anything-goes AUP.

And spam. Don’t forget the spammers!!

BuyVM is a huge sponsor of email spam and malware

it’s difficult writing about BuyVM because their support and policies and everything just seem to constantly change. mostly it seems like decisions are made on a whim, instead of by following established Terms and escalation procedure. you just never know which way things are going to go from all the stories I read on LET and WHT. that is part of the challenge with very small private teams.

sometimes bigger corporations are better at offering predictable experiences. hardware, policies etc, are announced and then followed (generally)

for BuyVM, it seems their Las Vegas datacenter has the best hardware options, but again this might have changed

it’s not even close. I try to support independent providers, but guess what? Vultr is also indie, they are just very good at growth and marketing and UI

BuyVM wants to forever be a one-man company. thats fine. but don’t expect much competence in the Support

Btw I do not consider BuyVM a “scam”, it’s not. but careless and indifferent, yes those are more accurate criticism–
