“Crawled – currently not indexed” for tons of .webp image URLs?

    Google is freaking out at my client’s site because they used to have thousands of .webp images in their design a few years ago, the files don’t exist anymore, but why is Google trying to index these files like they are HTML pages??? I thought they are static assets??

    actually, some of them are .jpeg.webp I don’t even know how that happened.

    ex:
    https://www.example.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/fullsizeoutput_16d72.jpeg.webp

    this seems like a Google problem tbh

    They should know that .webp are static assets and not meant for indexing. I don’t think there’s any point trying to fix these errors in GSC because it’s a mistake by Google.
